Recently spent a couple days trying to figure out why Quickbooks Pro 2015 multi-user mode wouldn’t work.
Our Environment
- Server – QB Pro 2015
- Windows Server 2012 R2
- 4 Cores
- 12 Gbs
- 10 GB network connection
- 3 workstations running same QB Pro 2015 and latest updates
Issue:
Multi-user mode would only work when the server have the company file open and is set to Multi-user Access. When the company file was closed on the server only 1 workstation could access the file. Error message: Quickbooks is unable to open this company file. It may have been opened by another user… and so on. Error Code: (-6190, -816)
Our Fix
We use DFS to push network shares to our users via group policy. Once we made a UNC shortcut QB loaded 10x faster and we were able to host multi user mode on any machine.
After confirming Firewall settings and folder permissions, it turned out to be because of how we referenced the file.
It was mapped to Q:\ – we had to reference the file via UNC path eg. \\servername\share
once we did that, the file access was much faster and we were able to actually use multi-user mode properly.
Summay
Quickbooks does NOT work with DFS and QB support is useless unless you buy their service contract.
